I read an amazing post recently on respect, teaching respect, gaining respect. How it’s a two way street. It reminded me of all the things I know and have learned over the years, reading all the books on child raising, that I just forgot. And in all honesty, haven’t used much lately.
Solving the problems and having a harmonious household is my goal. All the blocks are there I just have to arrange them in the right order. Kinda like lego.
I can see the goal posts but they’re a little way off. Starting today I am changing tact with both kids. School is back now, so electronics will be a privilege not a right, tv included. There will be chores and consequences for not doing them. They will help with household activities like cooking dinner and cleaning up. It will be tough to re implement but I am determined not to be a slave.
I have a new focus, this is my year. They are growing up and need to learn how to cook and clean, so we will focus on those skills. Besides slave labour is totally allowed when they’re your own kids. Right?!
I am even going to tackle the room maintenance! Lord help me 🙂 I have failed thus far but I think it’s because I’m coming at it all wrong. So now I’ll come at it right….. whatever that is, I’ll let you know when it works. The thing is I have the renewed energy to rectify some things that have been let go over the last year.
UPDATE: Since I wrote this post, I changed the kids bedroom around to give them separate spaces, although still sharing a room. They totally LOVE it. It’s so refreshing to see them playing together, without arguing. I even believe the upkeep will be easier. SO I am on the right track……….I hope 🙂

I’m so happy that your kids are responding to the structure you’re implementing. The more you show them that you expect ‘more’ from them, the greater their self-respect and their respect for you. Love and luck!

So far so good 🙂 It’s only been 2 days. Time will tell but I’m up for the challenge.
What struck me as really cool about this was that you are reciprocating the respect you expect. While teaching them these things and implementing new rules, you thought about how they may enjoy their opwn personal space and then you did that. I thought that was cool.
I enjoyed this post 🙂

Thanks for the feedback! It’s a work in progress but changing their room around has totally solved several issues…….for now anyway.

HA! Yeah I remember. Actually I didn’t change their water but the issue was I lied about it. Not very well either. Clearly I hadn’t done it, there was still slime in the dish. I learned the lesson though.
