The Really Big Awesome Workaholic Home Improvement Weekend

Screen Shot 2014-02-25 at 12.56.34 PMPhew, Well that was a weekend I don’t want to repeat every weekend. That said, it was spectacular weather in the City and we did enjoy not freezing our asses off or being buried under 6 foot of snow for a change, if only for a day or two. But we seem to be on the home improvement kick. Which is great because we’re finally getting things how we want them after 8 years but it’s hard work. This weekend we installed speaker in the bathroom and lights int he living room.

Who doesn’t want to play tunes while they scrub the goodies? We can get our disco moves perfected, especially now the King has moved the mirror INTO the shower… Don’t ask! So naturally when he does these things he wants it all tidy… because OCD,  and that’s where my work comes into play. All the wires must be behind the walls. He makes the holes and I get to patch them. I  HATE patching, hate it. I will paint houses all day long as long as there’s a prep crew that comes in before me and I just open the can and start rolling. But unfortunately that’s me in this house.

And because he wants it done and wants to enjoy it quickly, he just chases the wires with a drill or router rather than snaking it through and using 2 smaller holes. Even more fun for me! The entire length of the bathroom wall needed patching but only and inch wide. *facepalm* Of course when you patch you can’t just do an inch because you need to feather the edges to reduce the sanding. That shit is so messy Yo! And so when I finished, the compound mark was 8 inches wide along the wall. But this time when I sanded I wanted less mess and held the vacuum up. It actually helped with the spread, sure there was plaster dust  but the vacuum cut it down by more than half. I was finished to bathroom in about an hour, including cleaning. Not too bad.

While I was still working upstairs he was getting going downstairs with the second row of lights. We had put the first row up on Saturday and once again he chased the wires along the ceiling and down the wall. *sigh* another 10 feet of patching….  For the second row I said, “Can we please snake it? Patching and sanding makes SO much mess. I know it’s quicker for you but it’s so much more work for me.” He didn’t want to but I kinda insisted and it really didn’t take much longer and the holes are so much smaller, one was completely covered by the light cover strip!

The sanding of the first strip was a disaster though. The vacuum did not work the same way and even though I had everything covered there was white plaster dust over everything, including me.

So after I sanded and painted, with the job finished I spent another 3 hours cleaning . That’s a lot of steps for someone who didn’t leave the house. I’ll take the exercise I guess.photo 2 (1)

By 8pm I was ready for bed. No more home improves for a while ….ok?

But now, after 8 years,  we have actual lighting instead of lamps… I will never understand the lamp thing here is America. I suppose I should be grateful he can do this stuff and we didn’t need a handyman/electrician….

Do you have a handy husband? Are you the helper? It’s rewarding, I guess. Well having it finished is.

  1. The Mutant is handy, just not as… shall we say… efficient. Things get started, then I have to wait-no nagging allowed or it adds time onto the project-until he gets back to it. I’ve gotten really good at my practice of patience. I am almost zen about the whole thing.

And it is better than the big O when a project is finally completed. The rooms look fantastic.

  2. Wow! That’s a lot of steps sister!! No I do not have a handy husband unfortunately we pay a premium to have basically anything done around the house 🙁 However I am starting a project over spring break. Can’t tell you now, but I will most definitely blog about it.

  3. My husband says he is not handy. I disagree in some cases. He can be quite handy when he wants to, or when it’s something he volunteered in the first place. If it’s something he has never done before he will usually try to get away from it (I don’t blame him when it comes to electricity, but I am totally convinced we could lay down our own floor tiles).
