Life with a Special Needs Dog

You may remember back to the summer when we were in Australia, My Lord Dr king put in a doggie door for Sir Lickalot. It was time, I was his door bitch and I was getting rather annoyed with it.

Sir Lickalot fresh from the groomers

He had me trained. Even when he didn’t want to go out he would signal that he did and make me climb the stairs with him and wait while he went out onto the terrace and then open back for hime. Every time I came home the first thing was let the dog out. He was totally messing with me, My Lord Dr King likes to do projects when we’re away so I put that on the list. And I thought I didn’t have a ‘honey do’ list 😉

It’s been a life saver. It took him a few days to figure it our properly and My Lord Dr King was very patient , bless him, and showed Sir Lickalot how to get through, refusing to open the door but showing him the dog door every time and he got it but the minute I got home, he was back to his old habit. I had a hard time not opening the door and catering to his needs because I’d been trained.

Really well.

I caved and started opening the door, to which My Lord Dr King got mad, so I had to stop. It took all my willpower. And I felt rejected and no longer needed. it was an emotional time.

But he was right. Sir Lickalot does know how to use it and when he really wants to go out, he does, and comes back in.

But lately, I find him standing at the door again. I ignore it but he just stands there, sometimes inside and sometimes out, just watching me, waiting for me to open the door for him.

It’s like he’s forgotten there’s a door he can use any damn time he likes. His brain damage might be showing.

He sure remembers at 4 am, 5am and 6 am though …. asshole!

  1. Sir Lickalot! haha – love that. My dear old Xiu Xiu just stands at the door and barks incessantly until I open the door. She can’t see very well anymore, but remembers the times I’ve forgotten she was out there and isn’t taking any chances on spending any more time than she has to out there. Of course our next door neighbors have a small child who is undoubtedly trying to nap every time my loudmouth dog is out there yapping away. If I got the pugs a dog door it would be an excellent solution, but Xiu would probably not know to use it. *sigh*
