10 Television Shows We loved that our Kids will Never Understand

If you’re old like me, then you’ll remember when tv only had 4 channels and they turned on the test pattern at 11pm. Life was different then, not necessarily better but simpler. We didn’t have on demand tv, internet or even video players.

Our lives didn’t revolve around tv but we sure knew when things were on for fear of missing our favourite television shows. No Tivo back then!

Sunday night for us was family dinner, picnic style, in the living room watching The Wonderful World of Disney and it was a rare treat when it was a cartoon movie, rather than a Kurt Russell or Herbie the Love Bug or some other Disney movie.
At 7:30, the station mascot said ”Goodnight” to the kids and continued the evening with the adult dramas. Reminding parents to put the kids to bed.

This afternoon, we stumbled upon The Knight Rider and started watching, the kids had never seen it and though it was pretty corny but it still entertained them. They couldn’t believe that this was what we watched……

So in an endeavour to show my kids what tv used to be here are 10 shows I will be subjecting them to.

1. Obviously, The Knight Rider, which they thought was pretty funny, although it was serious drama back then.

2. Murder, She Wrote, a personal favourite and not just because Jessica Fletcher looks like my mother in law 🙂 I got totally addicted to it at 3am when Grand Master D was a little one and I was late night breast feeding.

3. Happy Days, who didn’t love the Fonz? I think the kids would like it. We sure loved to watch every week. Especially when Pinkie Tuscadero would make an appearance 🙂

4. Charlie’s Angels, Oh how I wanted desperately to be allowed to watch! I was too young, things were much more controlled back then, and it was on way past my bedtime but I so wanted to watch. I used to pretend to be Kate Jackson, I was blonde but Farrah nor Cheryl did it for me 🙂 You always want what you can’t have 🙂

5. Mork and Mindy, Who didn’t love Mork? nanu nanu. The kids would flip their lids to see this I just know it…I will have to find some episodes.

6. The Brady Bunch, this is an all time favourite and classic tv. Living in Australia we didn’t really relate to American life but we sure loved The Brady Bunch. I can’t imagine my kids watching this one for long….. although they would certainly understand it better than I, now that we live and breathe American life.

7. Welcome Back Kotter….. Oo, oo oo, Mr Kotter…..Epstein was hilarious and hey who didn’t have a crush on Vinnie Barbarino. I used to feel so sorry for Mr Kotter ….but here I am once again living it all. Who knew….. the kids might like it, they’re sure relate, especially Grand Master D.

8.Laverne and Shirley. It was always on after Happy Days. That just made sense.

9.M*A*S*H. I wasn’t allowed to watch it but I wanted to and later in life I made sure to watch often 🙂 The kids might not be ready for this one yet though

10. The Love Boat
Love, exciting and new
Come Aboard. We’re expecting you.
Love, life’s sweetest reward.
Let it flow, it floats back to you.

Love Boat soon will be making another run
The Love Boat promises something for everyone
Set a course for adventure,
Your mind on a new romance………..

Come on, you know you sang it instead of reading and you’re googling it now to see if there are episodes available… NO? really? Just Me? Oh well …..

Others that I loved and think the kids might get a kick out of the corny humour are Bewitched, I dream of Jeannie and The Partridge Family.

Little House on the Praire made me cry every god damned episode, and Oh how I hated Nellie Olsen.

Good Times, which my Dad didn’t like much but we kids did, J.J was such a goof ball…..

I’m sure I can find them on Netflix or some other source…. I really think they would enjoy seeing what we watched as kids …..or maybe it’s just for me but I’m going to try anyway.

  1. You’re bringing back memories, lady!!! Great list. I remember them all fondly. Sunday morning as I was getting ready to go for a run, my husband was flipping through channels and found an old B&W episode of Mr. Ed the talking horse and he sat and watched the whole thing and laughed his butt off. The kids had no idea what was so funny. :rolling my eyes:

  2. What a great list! You are so right about Mork and Mindy. I always thought that show was kind of annoying, but my son would lose his mind over Mork’s antics.

  3. Love, love, love your list. Mork and Mindy is a crossover with Happy Days and I love me some Robin Williams. What ever happened to him? He’s been MIA for a while. And, my sister and I used to pour milk into each other’s coke as a joke to see if the other one would figure it out. Oh, and don’t get me started on Captain Stubing and The Gopher!

  4. Great list! Though I have to say I have a hatred for Murder She Wrote. I went to college in a small town that didn’t have it’s own TV stations. So, we had to get TV from big cities nearby. And the only 2 channels that I could get clearly with an antenna (too poor for cable) played non-stop Murder She Wrote episodes. I could never see that show again, and be a happy woman.

  5. Love this roundup! Have watched #1-4 and 9 in my childhood!! Isn’t it funny that we thought Knightrider to be the coolest thing in technology back then?! Also, loved Remington Steele for obvious reasons (Brosnan!!), and the A-team!!
