And then as if by Magic……Silence

Everywhere across NYC today , if you’re a public school parent, you’re rejoicing in back to school. Summer is too long, the kids get bored and by September we’re all ready to part ways…right?!
Well in this house most definitely. As my wristband alarm buzzed me awake this morning at 6:30, I was ready, ready to make school lunches, ready to get out the door on time ready to see my friends and ready, oh so ready for silence, quiet and peace for 8 beautiful hours.

It all ran mostly well, Grand Master D was already awake and watching something on his ipad to get him in the mood, Miss Gremlin was sleeping but arose cheerily as is her nature. While I walked the ‘excited that people were up’ dog, I left them to the task of showering , so when I got back we’d breakfast and go. The plan mostly worked although I will be looking for a giant shower alarm clock for his nibbs, who still seems to take forever. One that rips him from the shower physically if he isn’t out in 10 minutes. Got any recommendations?

Breakfast and lunch making went smoothly and then Miss Gremlin wheeled the trolley full of supplies out. She’s been organising them for 2 weeks! I let her do it without supervision but now I find she’s taken everything out of the big box and just stacked it in the shopping trolley. Good Lord, one bump in the pavement and there’ll be pencils and notebooks all over the footpath, so we quickly threw them into a bag and got ready to leave. Grand Master D was fluffing around in the bedroom and Miss Gremlin shouts ‘seeya!’ as if she’s leaving to walk to school on her own with a huge cart full of supplies. No way! I’m coming too for the first day of school. I hurried Grand Master D again, ‘come on boy!’

I managed a very rushed first day pic, I think I’ll do it again tomorrow… Miss Gremlin was still trying to leave when I said NO Im coming, I want to see my friends too! Well this was all too much for the King who had been quietly listening from upstairs, he came down to ask, ‘Did you really just say you want to see your friends?’

I think I might me more excited than the kids.

All ready finally, as we leave the building Grand Master D says ‘I’m just gonna go’ and Miss Gremlin tries the same. ‘No I’m walking with you’ I tell her but she’s not happy. It takes less than a block for me to be walking to school on my own, oh well I tried.

 walking to school

I caught up to her at the door and took the cart for her. She went off to find her class and I took the supplies upstairs. I didn’t even see Grand Master D but he’s in 8th grade now, a senior at middle school, so having mum drop you off is so not cool.

First day of school is not what it used to be. Next year Grand Master D will be heading to high school. No doubt I’ll be waving him off on a city train or bus by himself. They’re growing up… I better get used to it.

  1. Wow! Such a difference in the “city live!” I am always amazed by kids who cross city streets and/or take the subway, etc. to school – and by the moms who have the guts to let them do it. It is so different where I am in the small town South! 🙂 Happy first day of school – hope you have enjoyed the silence!

  2. I am thankful that school is back in session; however, my two year old is at home with me now and it’s a bit of a challenge. He is an active two year old and I kinda miss having the older kids at home to help entertain him. I have a hard time because i suffer from chronic pain.
