Exams, They Start Them Early in NYC

This weekend Miss Gremlin attended the admissions tests for the schools she’s applying for. The first one, which she really wants was a 3 hour exam which she sat for in Columbia University. She, along with 250 other children, took their test in an actual college lecture hall!

She loved it, she was super excited about the tables that lifted up from the side of the seat. Although she wasn’t the first finished, she did finish her exam an hour early and felt pretty confident in how she went. We find out about that test on February 25. The wait will be tortuous!

The second test was only 1 1/2 hrs long. She said it was easy and was actually the first kid out. She sat that one with a hand full of her friends from her current school. I have no idea when we’ll find out those results.

The official letters from the DOE with our placements don’t come out until some time in May I believe, so we have to wait to see if we get what we want.

I know it seems like a crazy system and I guess it is, but it gives students and their parents options to follow career paths they may not necessarily get from a system where you go to your closest school. With any luck she’ll get the school she really wants and won’t have to go through the process again for 9th grade.

If she does, then next stop college!

  1. I like this process. Here in California there is only two “Open Enrollment” days. If you somehow miss those days, your stuck with your closest school or private options. On rare occasions an inter-district transfer can be requested, but the reason needs to be iron clad.

We are crossing things here for her.
