Taekwondo Down Under

Grand Master D and Miss Gremlin do Taekwondo at home with Harlem Taekwondo, lead by Master Fall. They’ve been doing it for about 4 months now, 5 days a week, 2 hours a day. It has improved Miss Gremlin’s physique incredibly and Grand Master D has great form.

Well the connection with the sport does not end there. My cousin and her husband run the local South East Australian Taekwondo school here in my home town and I had arranged that the kids could come and do a class with the Aussies.

Last night was the first class and we brought an entourage with us. Two grandma’s, an aunt, a cousin and a sister, none of whom had seen them do their stuff, other than on video and facebook.

The class was 1.5 hours, it was adults and kids together but run really well. Our kids did not seem out of place and it was clear that taekwondo is universal.

The Master, Tony Hedrick, when asked how they did commented that he fixed a few little things but didn’t know if that’s how they did it in Harlem or if they we just doing it wrong 🙂 I would suggest the latter. A sport is a sport… right?

Little Miss Gremlin got a free spar at the end with Master Tony and as always wasn’t scared of anything.

I think it’s wonderful that although they train and live on the other side of the world, the kids can come to Australia and jump into a class and blend right in…. well the Harlem Taekwondo lettering on the back of their uniforms could be a give away but they really had fun and want to do it again while we’re here.

Taekwondo is a great way to get fit, lose weight or to just enjoy the social aspect of a sport. Not to mention the added ability of defending yourself if you should ever be in that situation. Why not find a local class and check it out. It’s great exercise and release for the kids too.
